Paige Kirstein ’12, Jason Harris ’10, and Ben Howard ’11 from Beyond the Bottle, gave a presentation on the group’s campaign to eliminate both the supply and demand of bottled water on Brown’s campus. Among the successes of the campaign are a pilot program at Josiah’s Café that resulted in a 35% drop in bottled water consumption and the collection of over 300 pledges from students to choose tap water over bottled water. The group is interested in developing collaborative relationships with groups across the Brown community.
The Council approved the following resolution: This body supports the Beyond the Bottle campaign to provide sustainable alternatives to one usage bottles and urges Dining Services proactively to provide alternatives to students, faculty, and staff. We further move that students, faculty, and staff work as soon as possible to the complete elimination of bottled water on campus.
Mike McCormick, Assistant Vice President, Planning, Design & Construction, reviewed the University’s planning for the Jewelry District area. Plans include using university space to encourage economic development, making improvements to the public spaces, and locating the Alpert Medical School in a renovated building on Richmond Street. An overall goal is to develop circulation infrastructure to foster community, unity, and enhance the campus.
Margaret Klawunn, Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services, updated the Council on an incident that occurred the previous weekend at an event hosted by a student organization. During the event, a fight erupted and Department of Public Safety officers responded and pepper spray was discharged. A full review is being undertaken by DPS to determine if its use was consistent with departmental policies and protocol. In addition, the Student Activities Office is reviewing the event’s management plan to determine if policies were followed and if procedures can be improved for the future.
The next meeting of the Brown University Community Council will be held on February 9, 2010 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm in the De Ciccio Family Auditorium, Salomon Center.
