Provost Kertzer, Beppie Huidekoper, John Cassese, Barrett Hazeltine, Robert Klaber, Mark Ramadan, Neel Shah, Geoffrey Greene, and Sarah O’Dowd were unable to attend.

The minutes of the February 13, 2007 meeting were approved.

President Simmons gave an overview of the University’s Response to the Report of the Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice. She highlighted the major areas of the plan: Memorials and Commemorations, Academic Initiatives, and Community Initiatives. President Simmons responded to questions from members of the Council.

Lamont Gordon, Director of Outreach Education, gave a presentation on the K-12 Education Outreach Program at Brown. He reviewed his role as Director and gave an overview of the current outreach initiatives. There are 52 programs based in 16 departments. The Program is comprised of student-focused (71%), teacher-focused (33%), and administrator-focused (15%) initiatives. (Note: The percentage total exceeds 100 because some of the initiatives fall into more than one category.) Of the 37 programs with an academic focus, 51% are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), 21% are in literacy, another 21% are in general academic enrichment, with the final 8% in the arts. The Program provides service at the high school, middle school, elementary school, and K-12 combination level. Mr. Lamont concluded his presentation by giving a preview of the education outreach website that is being developed.

Dick Spies, Executive Vice President for Planning and Senior Advisor to the President, gave a presentation titled Brown – An Active Partner in Rhode Island’s Economic Growth and Opportunity. He reviewed the impact that Brown has on the State’s economic growth and its active partnership with the State.

Due to time constraints, the opportunity for members of the Brown Community to address the Council was deferred.

The next meeting of the Brown University Community Council will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm in Leung Gallery, Faunce House.
