The minutes of the November 13, 2007 meeting were approved.

Walter Hunter, Vice President for Administration and Chief Risk Officer, and Katie Panella ′08, a member of the Brown Designated Suppliers Program (DSP) working group, reported that the Brown DSP working group recommends that the University join the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) DSP working group and issue a statement of support. Mr. Hunter read the statement as drafted by the Brown DSP working group. (Mr. Hunter and Ms. Panella gave a presentation on the WRC DSP working group at the November 13 BUCC meeting.)

The Council voted unanimously in favor of a motion supporting the recommendation of the Brown DSP working group that the University join the WRC DSP working group and issue the statement as presented at the February 12 BUCC meeting.

Chris Powell, Director of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Initiatives, gave a presentation titled “Brown University’s Greenhouse Gas Goals”. Mr. Powell outlined the goals and how Brown will achieve them. The goals are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 42% below 2007 levels for existing buildings by 2020, limit greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption for all newly constructed buildings to between 25 – 50% below the standard required by state code, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for all newly acquired facilities by a minimum of 15% and as much as 30%. The goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42% will be reached through energy efficiency, fuel switching, and other means. Ginger Gritzo, Energy and Environmental Programs Coordinator, reviewed the Brown is Green program and its four areas of focus: research and teaching; University commitments; community collaborations; and student groups and initiatives. She concluded her presentation with a tour of the Brown is Green website.

Margaret Klawunn, Associate Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Student Life, reported on the preliminary findings and draft recommendations of the Committee on the Residential Life Experience.
The recommendations centered on facilities, faculty/student interaction, and programming and staffing.
The Committee concluded that the University needs to prioritize those improvements to facilities that will support opportunities for interaction between faculty, students and staff.

Due to time constraints, the opportunity for members of the Brown Community to address the Council was deferred.

The next meeting of the Brown University Community Council will be held on March 11, 2008 from 
4:00 – 5:30 pm in Leung Gallery, Faunce House.
